Samsung’s 5.5-inch Galaxy S6 Plus shows off two curved edges in leaked pictures

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 is widely considered one of the best smartphones the company has ever made, in terms of both design and power. As usual, the company is reportedly hard at work on a number of S6 spinoffs, including the Galaxy S6 Active. However, recently, a puzzling report hinted that the company may launch a 5.5-inch Galaxy S6 Plus phablet in the coming weeks. This would be an odd act of brand copying since Samsung essentially invented the phablet category with the Galaxy Note phones, which continue to sell well, and still appears ready to release a Galaxy Note 5.

Updated on 06-04-2015: Added leaked pictures of the device that were posted online.

Shortly after rumors about the Galaxy S6 Plus surfaced, popular YouTuber Marques Brownlee posted a video of the HTC One M9+, in which leaked pictures of the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus make an appearance at the end of the video. Brownlee says an anonymous source sent him the photos, which he believes are genuine. The images certainly corroborate the earlier rumor that the Galaxy S6 Plus will have two curved edges just like the original Galaxy S6 Edge, but will sport a bigger screen.

Apparently, the Galaxy S6 Plus is part of an internal project codenamed Project Zero, which was formerly known as Project Zen, reports Italian siteHDBlog.it. The device will allegedly launch in the coming weeks instead of at IFA in September, where the Galaxy Note 5 is expected to debut. The site filed the Galaxy S6 Plus report as a rumor, so it’s possible that the device won’t actually see the light of day.

However, if it does, the Galaxy S6 Plus is said to sport a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with the same high-resolution as the regular Galaxy S6, but it may be curved on both sides, just like the S6 Edge. The same Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor that LG used in the G4 is said to power the device, which will likely come with 32GB of internal storage. A 16-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera are also rumored.

The Italian site’s sources also say that the Galaxy Note 5 will launch as expected in September. That stylus-equipped device is expected to have a 5.7-inch 2K or 4K screen and super high-end specs. It’s unclear how Samsung would benefit from having two very similar high-spec phablets debut within a few months of each other, especially when the differences seem minimal (the S-Pen vs. the dual edges).

However, the report could have some truth to it, especially when you consider the publicly denounced rumor that the Galaxy Note 5 would launch as early as July. Could that tipster have mistaken the Galaxy S6 Plus for the Galaxy Note 5?

Add to that the fact that many manufacturers (Huawei, Microsoft, and HTC, to name a few) have started launching two versions of certain phones — one around 5 inches in size and another that’s 5.5 inches or bigger — and you’ve got a trend that Samsung may be joining with its own Galaxy S6 and S6 Plus.

Anything is possible, and at this point, it’s all speculation. Still, we’d recommend taking the Italian report with a sizable grain of salt.
